Florida Main Street visits Newberry
The State of Florida Florida Main Street Program visited the City of Newberry on Tuesday, October 10, bringing the official Main Street signs that will sit in front of City Hall and on NW 252nd. Joan Jefferson, Director of the Florida Main Street Program, met with city officials and the Main Street Board to discuss how the Main Street Approach can be used to revitalize downtown Newberry. The day started with the presentation of the official Florida Main Street signs that will soon be placed in prominent locations in Newberry’s downtown. Newberry City Manager Keith Ashby, Mayor John Glanzer, and Main Street Manager Garry Clarke were among those on hand for the presentation. Later in the day, citizens stopped by the Newberry Municipal Building to learn more about the Main Street Approach and sign up for one of the program’s five committees.

Organization — Through Organization activities, the organization will document a long-term community wide vision for how the downtown area should look, feel and grow. The goal for these organization activities will be a collaborative environment where citizens, business owners and the local government area actively and enthusiastically involved in revitalization efforts and feel proud to be an important part of those efforts.
Design- Through Design activities, Newberry the organization will achieve a consistent visual message that highlights our unique heritage and history. This involves the protection and preservation of the historic buildings in the Local Program Area, as well as ensuring that new construction is complementary to the historic character that is such a valuable asset to Newberry.
Promotion — As part of Promotion activities, the organization will develop a marketing strategy that is able to communicate the overwhelming sense of community pride to potential visitors. In addition, Newberry hopes to increase the number of public events in the downtown area to further involve residents and business owners and create even stronger community ties
Economic Restructuring — Through Economic Restructuring, the organization will use the existing strengths and unique assets of the Downtown area to spur a revitalization effort that will result in a functional, walkable mixed-use environment. This will include utilizing second-story floor space for residential or commercial office uses, recruiting a variety of businesses to provide a range of services in the Local Program Area, and promoting and strengthening the local businesses that are such an integral part of the Newberry community.
